Ok, recently I have been delving into the world of APRS (Automatic Packet Reporting System) Now I will admit that up until 2018 I had no clue as to what APRS did, therefore it was on radio but alas never used, but that was upto as I said 2018 when I started to play around with it a little, looked into it online and thought “Hang on I can do that”. Well I must admit I now enjoy it quite a lot. then on 30th December 2019 we had a very good tropo lift on FM so I decided to give it a real go there and was impressed with the results I received. Radio used was Yaesu FTM100DE but conditions were as stated, very good.
If you look at the pic in the upper right, over London area it is just awashed with colour, the Red and Orange represent good to very good Tropospheric ducting. I had a good QSO with a Ham in the Liege area of Belgium who said that he often uses APRS so I thought Hmmm I’ll give that a go myself and I was very surprised by the results I have to say. Firstly as this was my first real attempt at APRS I was sort
of expecting distances of around 80 miles (with ducting) but the distances just got further and further as the evening went on and I
believe that a lot further is possible with greater propagation than the results even I achieved. So how does it work? Well one of the best
I will say though that it’s a real time communication of things like GPS (Lat/Long), Weather conditions, Text Messages, Telemetry and other useful information about your own region. I have put together a list of Some of the stations I picked up from the 30th December 2019, I will stress that this is only a few there were many many more believe me.

Okay, since putting this page here I have found out a lot more info on the subject, one of the things that I found out was that it uses Digipeaters (Digital Repeater), well I don’t want to use Digipeaters so this isn’t really for me, But I will say that it’s a good mode if people are interested in positioning etc, It’s Just not for me.
A good monitoring system can be found at aprs.fi
