Okay, I am aware that most UK Hams fly to Zurich (Switzerland), get a train from there to Romanshorn, then get the ferry across Lake Constance to Friedrichshafen. Is that the quickest and less hassle route? Yes I guess it is as so many choose to use it. However for me this year 2023, I took the Eurostar service to Paris, then a train from Paris to Stuttgart for a couple of nights, then the train from Stuttgart to Friedrichshafen for three nights, then up to Heidelberg for a further two nights then back to Stuttgart for our train to Paris then home, takes longer but a whole lot better than flying, although beware of Paris Gare Du Nord, I’ve been there twice now and someone has attempted to separate me from my possessions, first was my camera and this year someone tried (unsuccessfully) to pick my pocket. So, how did it go? Well it was hot that’s for sure, Stuttgart was a nice stopover although the station is a complete mess at the moment, but we went into the Mercedes Museum and wow what a place, if you ever stay in Stuttgart give it a visit. Then we went down to Friedrichshafen by direct train, I must admit, that was very uncomfortable, no not the seats but the mere fact that they don’t allow any room for your luggage. Also the train had no air conditioning and was extremely hot inside, so we had a quite unpleasent two hour ride. So, what about the Ham Radio Show itself? Well it’s a big hall, no sign of Yaesu or the RSGB being there for starters, the actual event was okay but so much missing (possibly the after effects of the pandemic but who knows?). We didn’t really have a great look around the flea market, as I stated before it was so hot we just wanted to get a drink somewhere. I was going to buy a T-Shirt or two with my callsign on them but the day before we attended the show I received the Ofcom email regarding their consultation, Now as I’m an intermediate licence holder callsigns are going to change, as I don’t want to stick with 2E0 I will definately change mine, M8-M9? that’s the problem, which will I be offered? so I will send off for my T-Shirt once I know.
Friedrichshafen Hamfest
A few years ago TX Factor reported from the Friedrichshafen Hamfest you can watch their video below, but at the end of it BOB say’s We’ll definately be here again next year but I guess there just wasn’t enough funding which is a tremendous shame. From what I gather Friedrichshafen Hamfest has been around for many years, growing in stature and in size every year, attendances high and well attended by the big Ham radio companies (although Yaesu didn’t attend this year? Strange that one).

Information regarding Friedrichshafen 2025 will be coming on this page very soon, (Hopefully) I will try to keep you upto date with all of the latest news from that great place. Although (for obvious reasons) we go there for the Ham Radio Show which is great in itself, Friedrichshafen itself as a place is great to visit, We stayed in a hotel called City Krone, a lovely little place with extremely helpful staff.
